چکیده

In Stiles-Crawford effect of the first kind (SCE I) a beam of light entering from the edge of the pupil fails to elicit the same visual response compared to a beam hitting the pupil head-on. This effect is employed as an optical technique of pupil apodization in obtaining the retinal light distributions for a human eye. The novelty in this methodology centers on the simultaneous use of spatially coherent entering light and a triangular transmission profile as periodic target. It is found that unlike the modifications reported before in the modulation for incoherent illumination, almost no changes is observed in the modulation for a full pupil admitting coherent beams. This is in agreement with recent experiments performed using liquid crystal spatial light modulator and scanning laser ophthalmoscope. But our theoretical analysis has rich potential of showing how the coherence in the entering beam can be used as an optical tool to manipulate the spatial distribution of photon absorption in the photoreceptors of a human eye.

The Dependence of Spatial Distribution of Excitement of Receptors on Their Stiles-Crawford Effect

The spatial distribution of excitement of receptors depends on the magnitude of amplitude of light integrated over the wavefront passing through the pupil as conditioned by the receptor’s acceptance lobe. Because the peripheral zones of the pupil are less efficient in eliciting visual excitation than the pupil’s centre, otherwise known as Stiles-Crawford effect of the first kind (SCE I), the sp...

Spatial frequency response of a human eye apodized with the stiles crawford effect of the first kind in coherent illumination

A beam of light passing near the centre of the pupil of a human eye stimulates the retina more than an identical beam making an entry from the edges of the pupil. This is Stiles-Crawford effect of the first kind (SCE I). This diminution in the effective brightness of a beam is retinal in origin. But in the computation of how the human eye responds to different spatial frequencies in the object,...

Incorporation of directional effects of the retina into computations of optical transfer functions of human eyes.

Two-dimensional optical transfer functions (OTF's) of individual human eyes are computed from the retinal images of a point test object, using a phase-retrieval method. The retinal reflection directionality effect is included in the computations by means of an apodization pupil, and subsequently the Stiles-Crawford effect is also considered. The modulation transfer functions obtained when the r...

Stiles–Crawford effect of the first kind: assessment of photoreceptor alignments following dark patching

Properties of presumed mechanisms controlling photoreceptor alignments are partially defined. A phototropic mechanism normally dominates alignment, but do modest changes in orientations occur with dark patching? Here, new photopic Stiles-Crawford (SCE-I) determinations were made before patching (pre-patch), just after 8-days of dark-patching (post-patch), and 3 days after patch removal (recover...

Adaptive optics scanning ophthalmoscopy with annular pupils

Annular apodization of the illumination and/or imaging pupils of an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) for improving transverse resolution was evaluated using three different normalized inner radii (0.26, 0.39 and 0.52). In vivo imaging of the human photoreceptor mosaic at 0.5 and 10° from fixation indicates that the use of an annular illumination pupil and a circular imaging...
